For those of you who know me, you know that I have a pretty serious relationship with smoothies. I have one every day, and it’s not unusual for me to have two… so I figured it’s time to do (another) blog post on them!
Why should you add smoothies to your diet?
Smoothies are quick and have a TON of health benefits. They can easily be the healthiest meal of your day! It can be a little weird going from a normal meal to a liquid one, but your body will adjust, and soon you may find yourself craving them and feeling quite satisfied from them.
What are the health benefits?
Multiple servings of fruits and veggies
A smoothie can easily get you 3-5 servings of produce a day. Fruits and veggies are the healthiest foods on the planet – nutrient dense and packed with vitamins and minerals to keep your body performing at it’s peak.
Good dose of fiber
You know what else comes with a ton of fruits/veggies? A ton of fiber! Fiber is great for the digestion and getting rid of waste in your body. You’d probably be surprised that your standard diet may not even come close to the recommended daily amounts of fiber. A smoothie can help alleviate that!
This one has been HUGE for me. I struggled for a while with awful digestion, but after a few weeks of daily smoothies, my digestion improved SO much. It’s a nice break for your system; it doesn’t have to work as hard to process the food in the smoothie because the blender has done some of that for you. I feel so much lighter and more energized!
Between the liquids you add to your smoothie and the fact that produce is typically filled with water, you’ll get a good boost of hydration when you include a smoothie in your daily routine. This is especially helpful first thing in the morning when you wake up dehydrated!
How do I get started?
Here are 2 of my favorite smoothie recipes!
My (current) favorite breakfast smoothie:
– 1.5 cups water
– 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
– 1 tbsp natural peanut butter
– 1 banana
– 3 cups baby spinach
– 1 scoop Vegan Chocolate Shakeology (any chocolate based protein powder works!)
My favorite green smoothie:
– 1.5 cups water
– 1/2 cup unfiltered apple juice
– 3-4 cups spinach or kale (or mixture of both)
– 1 cup frozen mango
– 1 cup frozen pineapple
– 1 tbsp chia seeds
– Optional: 1 scoop protein powder or Shakeology
